The Canadian Air Transport Security
Association, (CATSA) selected LG’s IrisAccess
hardware and software for iris recognition in a
competitive bid in 2004 to be part of a comprehensive
security solution deployed at 29 airports throughout
Canada. LG’s solution is an integral component
of the Restricted Area Identification Card (RAIC)
that combines iris and fingerprint templates on
a smart card to secure high risk areas. The RAIC
will be issued to over 130,000 airport employees
upon satisfactory background checks and interoperate
with over 15 existing airport access control systems.
Only individuals carrying a valid RAIC and presenting
a biometric for positive identification will be
granted access to secure locations at the these
airports. Continuing into 2007, the CATSA RAIC solution
is the only nationally deployed airport biometric
identification solution.
The RAIC solution in 2006 earned CATSA a Gold
Canadian Information Productivity Award (CIPA) for
Exceptional Innovation. The highly prestigious CIPA
awards are made to outstanding private and public-sector
organizations in recognition of their leadership
in transforming their organizations through the
strategic application of information technologies.
The success of the RAIC program is in the
technology as well as the cooperation between
the technology industry, CATSA and our Stakeholders,
especially the airports, who are very important
contributors. Building an effective security
system goes beyond technology alone; it involves
people and partnerships and RAIC is an example
of what team work can achieve.
